Frequently Asked Questions

2 What is "grid connect" solar PV ?
Most homes are connected to the electricity grid, which uses alternating current (AC) electricity. The electricity generated by solar panels is direct current (DC). This means that grid connected solar systems need an inverter to convert the DC electricity into AC electricity to make it suitable for household needs. Homes with solar systems use solar power first, during daylight hours, before sourcing electricity from the grid. When solar panels are not producing electricity (at night or in very dull weather), electricity is supplied from the existing electricity grid.
3 What is an inverter and how does it work ?
The inverter, which is generally installed close to your power board, converts DC power into AC electricity. The efficiency of an inverter is measured by how well it converts from DC to AC and this usually ranges from 95% to 97.5% for most models. Inverters are sized according to the power (watts) they can supply.
7 What is the lifetime of the panels/inverter ?
While the Performance Guarantee is for 25 years, the panels expected lifetime is at least 40 years. Product warranty is 10 years or varied manufacturers warranty. Performance guarantee is 90% of initial output after 10 years, and 80% after 25 years.

How does the net feed-in tariff scheme work ?

The net feed-in tariff rate is applied whenever electricity generation exceeds household consumption during the day and not just the balance at the end of a household's billing cycle. It is applied on the net electricity exported. The scheme rewards system owners for the electricity they export to the grid, thereby promoting increased energy efficiency in the home.
